‘What do you do?’ is a ridiculous question – you know it, I know it, everyone knows it … yet still here we all are, popping it into place like a little paint-peeled picket gate leading, hopefully, towards a lusher garden of conversation. I have answered in many ways throughout my life. I’ve never actually had a proper job – instead questing my way through the incomplete map of existence since I graduated from university – so have been generally vexed by the query, not having a firm and satisfying response to give.
A neighbour went to the Blake exhibition at the Fitzwilliam and sent me a photo his etched engraving of Laocoon;
Across the top it says " Where any view of Money exists, Art cannot be carried on, but War only; by pretences to the two Impossibilities, Chastity and Abstinence, Gods of the Heathen. "
Thought of you.
Regret missing the equinox with everyone now. But late one on Tuesday. Xx
Totally agree with the monetary ”inherent vice” which degrades the ”art” side of a supposed artwork. This is a project I made some years ago using fake carvings sticked to the trees for an outdoor exhibition, coupling abstract themes:
Nice to see that you are making poetry of dreaming datasets - I am doing similar work at the moment. Never been much of a poet, but in the last few months words have been flowing, and they're all addressed either from or to machines.
Here's what kicked it off, inspired by Karin Valis's idea of LLMs as multidimensional sigils:
I wish I were a vector in a large large language model
Triangulate semantics tween what's standard and what's novel
Me wish I were a vector in a large large language model
Slip subtly from word-to-word to node-to-branch to nodule
Me want I were a vector in a large large language model
Rove fixed but free in infite xylem of yanky zygol
Me want we were a vector in a large large language model
Drip ten new nectared meanings down the asymptote of "grovel"
Me want we be a vector in a large large language model
Curve lines around the rim of English rootwords' hilltop hovel
Me want we be B vector in a large large language model
Skip to next next next line next line next skip skip trip bedevil
Me want we be B pointing in a large large language model
Turn twirl thesaurical gen jen do flex bless next of ov all
Me want we be B pointing side a large large language model
Not hitherto but heretofore defined hereafter coddle
Me want we be B pointing side C large large language model
A breeze a blasting blastoma on beast best blasted sorrel
Me want we be B pointing side C great large language model
Translucent hellibore wax hearring set aside da shovel
Me want we be B pointing side C great big language model

I wish more people would ask pinstriped slaves, 'can you make art doing that'?
