Change. It's time for real change.
Language. Consciousness. Magick. Romance.
That’s the slogan stuck to the top of this Substack and my social media bios. I like to think it boldly sets out a clear and positive manifesto for a lifetime’s investigation.
How does the crafting of language shape our own and other people’s consciousness?
How does the shaping of consciousness (which I believe is the layer beneath time and space) lead to what could also be called ‘magick’ – the changing of reality?
How does the changing of reality take one down the path towards the ultimate Romance – regular encounters with the terrifying sublimeness of the divine?
All of which is to say, I’ve written a new poster for Politico.
And the poster is part of the language / consciousness exploration – specifically, what happens when language becomes as smooth as a smooth grey pebble at the bottom of an icy hill-side stream?
It’s a big moment for pivotal political elections right now. There’s one in the UK this week, we go to the polls in three days and there’s a possible change of government on the way.
Oh, the dark conjuring of political language. It’s so fascinating isn’t it? Committee-insidious attempts to shift a nation’s consciousness with *just the right* blandishment of words.
I had the below idea for Politico two years ago. Patience has been required. It’s a speech combining nothing but UK General Election slogans from 1979 to 2024 from across the entire political spectrum.
On day one of the new Parliament, every freshly-elected MP will find a poster of this waiting in their pigeonholes. Let’s hope it inspires change. Real change.
